How Electrical Testing Is Done

Many of our everyday items are powered by electricity. It’s vital to keep your electricals in good working order to ensure that they remain safe. There’s a few different ways that electrical testing can be done, and in some cases it will be a requirement. Let’s take a closer look.

Voltage Tests

Before carrying out any sort of work on any electrical appliance, it’s important to carry out voltage tests. This protects the electrician from harm, as faulty live equipment can cause shocks. Voltage testing can be done using a special machine called a voltmeter. This device can measure voltage with a single touch.

PAT Testing

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing. It can be done by anyone, but is most often carried out for landlords and commercial premises. The purpose of this electrical testing is to ensure that electrical devices meet the minimum safety standards. Devices which pass the test have a low risk of electrical shock and fire. A visual check is carried out as well as some technical tests using special equipment.

EICR Reports

EICR stands for Electrical Installation Condition Report. This differs from the PAT test because it focuses on testing the electrical sockets, fuse boxes, light switches and similar equipment. Electrical testing will also be carried out on the wiring, with the aim of identifying any damaged or dangerous parts. It’s best to carry out regular EICR checks, particularly in commercial spaces and rented properties.

Landlord Checks

In the UK, landlords are required to have electrical testing and inspections carried out every 5 years. A copy of the certificate must be provided to their tenants. As well as testing every 5 years, landlords are required by law to provide the safest homes possible. Therefore, it’s likely that some landlords will carry out testing at more frequent intervals.
